The 14VB Stub End functions as a lap joint flange adapter. When welded to the end of a pipe, it provides a flat, perpendicular surface. A loose flange (backing ring) is slid over the stub end. When bolted to a mating flange, the stub end acts as the sealing surface, while the flange provides the mechanical clamping force. Critically, the flange is not welded to the pipe, which allows for rotational alignment and easy disassembly without disturbing the pipe weld.
